  • WHAT: "Homecoming" News Conference to "welcome home" Philadelphia ash to PA
  • WHEN: TOMORROW, Tuesday, June 25, 11:00 AM
  • WHERE: Antrim Township Building, 10655 Antrim Church Rd, Greencastle
  • WHO: Michael Morrill, local and PA environmental leaders.

(READING, PA)-Green Party nominee for governor Michael Morrill will hold a mock "homecoming" for 2,500 tons of ash that is being sent to a landfill in Franklin County, PA. The ash is the remains of Philadelphia trash that was burned sixteen years ago. The ash has been on a worldwide journey in search of a final repository. It was rejected by nations in the Caribbean, and South and Central America. The ash was even illegally dumped on a Haitian beach before being shipped to Florida in 2000.

It is now scheduled to begin arriving as early as this week in Franklin County's Mountain View Landfill at the rate of 200 tons per day.

Morrill will decry the lack of a comprehensive trash policy in Pennsylvania, outlining the state's rapid transition from dumping its problems on others to accepting trash from 28 states, Puerto Rico and Canada.

Morrill will be joined environmental and anti-trash activists who will hold a mock "welcome home" party, complete with "ash" cake.
