Morrill Accepts Fisher Invitation to Debate Challenges Rendell to Agree to Inclusive Forums |
Morrill for Governor NEWS RELEASE July 2, 2002 For Immediate Release (READING, PA)-Michael Morrill, the Green Party nominee for governor, agreed to a series of debates with Michael Fisher and Edward Rendell this fall. Morrill accepted the terms outlined by Fisher who proposed a series of seven debates-six of them televised. Vicki Smedley, the Greens' candidate for lieutenant governor, also agreed to debates as proposed by the Fisher/Earll campaign. "I am pleasantly surprised that Mr. Fisher has invited me to join in this series of debates," said Morrill. "I sincerely thank him for recognizing the need to include all voices. I promise to make this fall's debates the liveliest and most informative in Pennsylvania's history." The Rendell camp has not yet accepted the invitation, although Morrill expects that Rendell will agree. "Mr. Rendell challenged Robert Casey, Jr. to weekly debates this past spring, so we know he believes in the free exchange of ideas," added Morrill. "We look forward to Mr. Rendell's acceptance so we can begin working out the details, such as format, times and locations." Morrill is currently circulating petitions to assure his place on the ballot. The Greens need over 21,000 valid signatures by August 1 to qualify. The Democrats and Republicans needed only 2,000 signatures. Morrill will be joined by dozens of other Pennsylvania Green candidates on this fall's ballot. Michael Morrill for Governor
