Jeff Toste will announce his candidacy for District 5 Senate on
Thursday, June 20th, 5:30 pm, at the Cranston Street Armory/Dexter
Training Grounds. Toste, a Tiverton native and longtime resident of
Providence's West End, will run on the Green Party ticket and challenge
incumbent Frank T. Caprio.
"People don't vote because they don't think their vote matters. I
believe people will feel inspired to vote if they have a real
choice," said Toste. "A real choice means new candidates who
will fight for the rights of all people, not just those with power and
money." Toste plans to run a clean campaign focused on respectful
education (renewed emphasis on respect for the student, teacher and
community); eliminating toxins in our schools; creating quality jobs and
environmentally friendly industry for Rhode Island; legislature
accountability and balance of power; and pushing for equal pay for equal
work (women and minorities are too often victims of pay inequity.)
"Providence and Rhode Island have so much to offer—comparatively
low cost of living, beautiful natural resources, and great higher
education. But there are forces working against these offerings, and
many of those forces are in the form of the often misguided leadership
of our elected representatives," Toste declared. "Rhode Island
can’t afford to lose taxpayers and businesses, in fact, we need to
work harder to encourage people to move here and work here—increasing
our tax base is how we get out of our deficit problem—not by using
money set aside for health care or education or low income
housing."
Toste, a long time volunteer with the RI Green Party, was the Rhode
Island organizer for the Nader 2000 campaign. He helped lead the Green
Party to gain ballot status and become a legally recognized party in
Rhode Island. He is now head of the RIGP media committee and editor and
designer for Green News. Toste earned a B.A. in Illustration and Design
from Southeastern Massachusetts University (now UMass North Dartmouth)
and prior to his involvement in the community, spent 10 years working in
the art and music industry.
Providence residents and interested parties are invited to the Campaign
Kickoff, 5:30 p.m. at the Cranston Street Armory/Dexter Training Ground
at the intersection of Dexter and Hollywood.
