Party Calls For Support of Local and Nationwide Protests

SALT LAKE CITY -- The Desert Greens Green Party of Utah is calling for a statewide challenge to President Bush's plan to escalate the U.S. military commitment in Iraq with a surge that would add thousands of Troops. Bush's announcement is expected to be made this week.

Chuck Tripp, 2006 Desert Greens Candidate for Salt Lake County Council said, "I think the word 'surge' emerged from the collective Bush administration mouth some time during the summer of 2003. Of course, surge simply means sending more troops to fight Bush's war, which he hopes to win to salvage his presidential legacy, for an indefinite period of time. This president who just declared last week that keeping troops safe was one of his New Year's resolutions, now wants to send at least 20,000 more troops into the most dangerous place in the Iraqi war zone. Did I miss something here, or was Mr. Bush's resolution his same old story-saying one thing while doing another?"

"The Bush administration should be held accountable for the crime of illegally invading and occupying Iraq," states Deanna Taylor, Co-Coordinator of the nationally affiliated Utah Party. "More than 3,000 U.S. service members and hundreds of thousands of Iraqi civilians have been killed in a war that has, from the beginning, been based on lies. The only 'surge' should be the immediate withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq."

Desert Greens will join other peace activists in a picket from 6:00pm to 7:00pm on the day the Utah papers publish Bush's announcement of his plans to send more troops to Iraq. The picket will be held on the sidewalk in front of the Federal Building, 100 South State Street.
