DESERT GREENS GREEN PARTY OF UTAH CANDIDATES TO TRAVEL TO CAMP CASEY IN CRAWFORD, TEXAS
SALT LAKE CITY -- Two Candidates from the Desert Greens Green Party of Utah will be traveling to Camp Casey in Crawford, Texas from August 17 - August 21. Deanna L. Taylor, Candidate for Salt Lake County Council District 5 and Tom King, Candidate for Utah State House District 43 will attend as members of the Green Party of the United States Peace Action Committee. (GPAX). GPAX has erected a tent at Camp Casey and members are actively involved in projects dedicated to education the public about the U.S. Administration's promotion of war. GPAX supports and promotes the Party's Anti-War candidates and agenda.
Camp Casey was founded by Cindy Sheehan whose son Casey, was killed in Iraq. Sheehan has bought 5 acres of land in Crawford that supporters have designated Camp Casey Three, the third in a series of campgrounds occupied in protest of the war designated as "Camp Casey III". Sheehan is still waiting for President George W. Bush to meet with her. There are no plans to do so this year, according to White House spokesperson Tony Snow. Bush has apparently cut his month of August vacation short, announced shortly after it was learned the Camp Casey was to be reivied again. "It must be that he is afraid of the truth and too cowardly to, again, face grieving families and thousands of others who adamantly oppose his murderous policies," said Sheehan in an interview with Dan Barker of Toward Freedom.
King states, "I look forward to the opportunity to meet one of America's most Courageous and dedicated contemporary figures. Cindy Sheehan, thru her commitment to speaking truth to power has demonstrated what the Founding Fathers intended in terms of citizen participation."
"Cindy Sheehan is an inspiration to women everywhere," says Taylor. In a world that devalues the worth of women, Cindy is living proof that women make a difference. Women are empowered when other women speak out to the atrocities committed against us and our children. Cindy's fortitude, persistence and courage give hope to women that their voices will be heard and action will be taken." Taylor also states that while at Camp Casey she and King plan to help construct wooden crosses which will be erected in memory of soldiers killed in Iraq.
Sheehan will keep Camp Casey at the new property until two things happen - the US withdraws from Iraq and Bush leaves office. When both of those things transpire, she will donate the property to the City of Crawford to use for a peace park in honor of her son.
