Wisconsin Greens Launch 3-Day Anti-Tyson Ruckus. |
Wisconsin Green Party Local Green Party city and county officials will announce the introduction of resolutions aimed at halting government procurement of Tyson Products This Wednesday, June 11 at 10AM, on the steps of the City County Building. Green Party activists will also be kicking off three days of boycott picketing across the Madison area. "Tyson corporation controls 30% of the food processing market in the country, by offering 33% in concessions Tyson is trying to bring the poverty-type wages that it has established in the poultry industry to the red meat industry," says Chuck Moehling, a striking member of United Food and Commercial Workers Local 538. "But with the help of consumers we can make Tyson Corporation offer their employees a fair contract." Moehling, and other striking members of UFCW 538 will testify to the success of their strike, and the reasons for the Green Party's boycott of Tyson goods. Elected Green officials, including Madison Alders Benford, King, and Konkel, as well as County Supervisors Vedder, Richmond, Hendrick, and Matano, will be also on hand to explain their efforts. The Green Party has supported the over four hundred workers of the Jefferson Tyson Plant since the beginning of the 90-day strike. Wednesday, June 11 will be BIG BOX GROCER DAY Madison and Jefferson residents will be picketing at Copps Grocery Stores from 4:30 to 6:30PM at 620 South Whitney Way and 2502 Shopko Drive locations. Copps carries Tyson products and is non-union. The Four Lakes Green Party asks that Copps discontinue the sale of all Tyson Products. Pepperoni from Tyson plants, such as the one in Jefferson is sold commercially on DiGiorno, Jack's, Tony's and Tombstone Pizzas, which are prominent in the Copps showcase. Thursday, June 12 will be CO-OPS FOR WORKERS DAY. Picketing will begin at 4:30 till 6:30PM at the Williamson Street Cooperative located at 1221 Williamson Street. The Green Party requests the removal of Tyson products from coop shelves. Finally, the Friday the 13th will be SCAB-FREE PIZZA DAY. Community members will picket the Pizza Huts located at 2649 East Springs Drive and 7440 Mineral Point Road from 4:30 to 6:30PM. UFCW Local 538 members in Jefferson, Wisconsin, are standing up against Tyson Foods' demands for a 23% wage cut, a 4-year wage freeze, elimination of pensions, cuts in health care, reductions of vacations, and less sick leave. The 470 Tyson workers went out on strike over these proposals on February 28 and remain committed to keeping their wages, benefits, and community intact.
