The Wisconsin Green Party Congratulates the Forest County Potawatomi and the Mole Lake Band of the Sokaogon Chippewa on their purchase of the Crandon Mine. The Party is also thankful for their action, which will end 2 decades of struggle to protect the headwaters of the Wolf River and area lakes and rice beds, and result in a benefit to all Wisconsin residents. We are grateful that the cultural, historic and spiritual importance of the region will be preserved as well.

"This was a fight that had to be won, for the seventh generation," said Amy Mondlach of the Four Lakes Green Party based in the Madison area. "Our children's children have been depending on us to protect their water.  Everyone who took a stand in this struggle against the many companies that tried to destroy our water and the resting place of ancestors of the Mole Lake Chippewa should take a moment to thank and honor each other. It's been a job well done."

"The Mole Lake Chippewa and Forest County Potawatomi tribes have stepped up to the plate and done what the state should have done years ago -- purchased the ore deposit near Crandon and made it off limits to mining," said Jeff Peterson, former Green candidate for Lieutenant Governor. "The rest of the state is  indebted to these tribes, and the $16.5 million they spent protecting northern Wisconsin's environment should somehow be paid back. At the very least, every Wisconsinite who cares about water quality should make it a point to spend some money at one of their casinos in the very near future."

The Wisconsin Green Party is an affiliate of the Green Party of the United States, and stands on the four pillars of Ecological Wisdom, Nonviolence, Social & Economic Justice, and Grassroots Democracy.
