Oregon, WI -- Rae Vogeler, Wisconsin Green Party
candidate for U.S. Senate 2006, blasted Kohl's decision to vote for
President Bush's nominee for Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.
Vogeler sharply criticized Herb Kohl's decision to
vote for Roberts, saying, "He is playing games with women's
lives. Maybe it's difficult for a man like Kohl to understand the
profound importance of protecting a woman's right to choose."
"Today, Herb Kohl let down generations of
women who will be forced to live under decades of anti-woman decisions
coming from the Roberts Supreme Court," warned Vogeler. Over the
course of Roberts' judicial career, he has opposed Roe v. Wade, the
Violence Against Women Act, affirmative action programs, and Title IX.
As one of only three Democrats on the Judiciary
Committee to vote for Roberts, Herb Kohl deeply praised the nominee
saying, "I have enormous respect for Judge Roberts' legal
talents."
Today the Senate Judiciary Committee, in a 13 to 5
vote, moved in favor of endorsing Judge John G. Roberts Jr. to be the
next Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court, sending the
nomination to the full Senate for confirmation next week.
Vogeler added, "I guess this vote isn't so
out of character considering that Kohl voted for the Iraq War, the
Patriot Act, tax cuts for the rich and the Bankruptcy bill."
