U.S. Senate candidate urges Kohl not to give
another Bush nominee a "free ride"
(Oregon, WI)- Today President Bush nominated his
White House Counsel Harriet E. Miers to the Supreme Court, despite
little evidence of her support for basic values such as civil rights,
workers' rights, and voting rights.
"Unfortunately, President Bush has given us a
corporate lawyer with little public record," said Rae Vogeler,
who is challenging three term incumbent Herb Kohl for the U.S. Senate
in 2006. "I'm concerned with this administration's past of
withholding essential information from the public, and I urge Senator
Kohl not to give Harriet Miers the same free ride he gave
Roberts."
Senator Kohl strongly supported the nomination of
Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. to the Supreme Court.
"This is another example of Bush
cronyism," said Vogeler. "Bush nominees are typically chosen
for their loyalty, not their experience or expertise. Michael Brown's
appointment to FEMA is a prime example. Miers has no judicial
experience, and many very capable candidates were passed over in her
nomination. The Roberts and Miers nominations are similar in that
neither has a record of supporting women's rights, workers' rights, or
the right of the federal government to protect the environment."
The Bush administration has a worse record than
most administrations for cronyism.
Rae Vogeler is a prominent leader in the peace
movement in Wisconsin. Over the years she has been an environmental
advocate and active in the struggle for women's equality.
"Real leadership means putting hard working
people before powerful corporations and their rich friends," she
continued.
"I'm worried that Senator Kohl is going to
surrender to the Bush Administration on Miers like he did for the
Roberts confirmation, the Iraq War, the Bankruptcy Bill and tax cuts
for the rich."
