(Oregon, WI) U.S. Senate candidate Rae Vogeler sharply criticized
Congressional leaders over the looming budget fight, stating it was
hypocritical of Republicans to speak of fiscal discipline when their
war spending and tax cuts for the rich have exploded the federal
deficit.
"Let's be very clear about this," said
Vogeler. "Republicans showered huge tax cuts on the rich. Then
they spend, spend, and spend on war. Now they're saying, 'Oops! No
money for the home front.'"
Rae Vogeler is challenging Herb Kohl for the
Senate in fall 2006.
"After all their war spending, do Republicans
really want us to believe that cutting food stamps, slashing Medicare,
eliminating farm supports and reneging on student loan relief is the
fiscally responsible thing to do?"
She pointed out that money saved by these cuts is
a drop in the bucket compared to war spending. Last week Congress
passed a bipartisan $455 billion war bill without a single dissenting
vote in the Senate. Now, Republicans are looking to cut $50 billion
from the home front, including veteran's benefits.
"Taxpayers aren't duped," she said.
"Republicans claimed for years they were tough on spending, but
we sure haven't seen it in office. Just look at the deficit! Real
fiscal responsibility means getting the priorities right. Spending on
war and corporate welfare are the wrong priorities."
Vogeler noted that tax cuts for the rich have
shifted the tax burden onto working people. "We know that every
year the rich pay less and less and working families pay more and
more."
"The bottom line is that this Congress does
not look out for the taxpayer's wallet. We need a working mom in the
Senate who understands what fiscal responsibility really means. "
