'Bring the Troops Home' referendum coordinator Jeff Peterson, and candidate
for U. S. Senate Rae Vogeler will hold a press conference at 10:30 AM,
Saturday, November 12th, at 3133 N. Oakland Ave, an Army Recruiting office.
The Fall Gathering Membership Meeting of the Wisconsin Green Party will be
held in Milwaukee this weekend at the Urban Ecology Center, 1500 East Park
Place. The first item of business is a request for endorsement of the
members of the Wisconsin Green Party by Rae Vogeler, candidate for U. S.
Senate, running against Herb Kohl. The WGP Elections Committee has already
interviewed Vogeler, and is recommending endorsement.
During the afternoon, members will be collecting signatures for the
Milwaukee referendum, whose wording is, "Should the U.S. end the occupation
of Iraq and immediately begin withdrawing our troops starting with our
National Guard and Reserves?" The Wisconsin Green Party launched a 'Bring
the Troops Home' referendum at its April Membership meeting in Stevens
Point. Since then, the effort has grown beyond the Green Party, and has
been embraced by citizens all over the state who are concerned about the War
on Iraq and passionate about democracy. State Representatives Mark
Pocan, Joe Parisi, and Spencer Black were among those signing the Bring Our Troops
Home Coalition's petition for a troop withdrawal referendum at a recent
event in Madison. At least 29 communities are working on getting the referendum on their April ballot.
In 10 of these communities, the required signatures have already been obtained.
The War on Iraq is an important issue in Rae Vogeler's campaign. Vogeler has
been a community organizer for thirty years on social justice issues ranging
from peace and women's rights to workers' rights and the environment. She
is a working mother of two living in the Town of Oregon and is challenging
Herb Kohl for U.S. Senate in 2006.
"As my children grow older, I'm deeply concerned for their future. Greed has
twisted the priorities of our government. Ongoing war threatens the opportunities and very lives of our children," she said. "I'm running to
bring a progressive voice to the Senate. My opponent voted for the Iraq
War, the Patriot Act, tax cuts for the rich and made it easier for corporations
to declare bankruptcy but harder for working families. Herb Kohl is out of touch with the people of Wisconsin."
"To show how serious this campaign is about representing all of Wisconsin, I
will be taking Kohl's record of war and my vision of health care and jobs to
the people by campaigning in all 72 counties in the state by March 2006. I
challenge Herb Kohl to travel the whole state and listen to everyday people's concerns like I am."
Vogeler will receive the Green Party's endorsement for U.S. Senate on
Saturday at the Fall Gathering. The official campaign kickoff will most
likely be made sometime next April.
