The Wisconsin Green Party supports Senator Russ Feingold's introduction of
Senate Resolution 398, calling for the Censure of President Bush for illegal
wiretapping.
"We know that Senator Feingold is not getting much support from Democrats or
Republicans for this minimal request for accountability, " said Bob
Poeschl, Co-chair of the Wisconsin Green Party. "We would welcome Senator Feingold
into the Green Party - a party that defends the Bill of Rights and the civil
rights of Wisconsin citizens, and holds our President and other elected
officials accountable. The Democratic Party's silence on Feingold's censure
is the latest manifestation of its unwillingness to stand for even the most
basic of principles - those upon which our nation was founded."
"Senator Feingold has long stood for safeguarding the civil rights of the
American people," said Rae Vogeler, Green candidate running for Senator
Kohl's seat in the November, 2006 election. "Censure is a tool of accountability in the Senate,
and is a good first step. We support the resolution of censure, but call upon Feingold to go one step further, and
support Rep. John Conyers' demand to investigate President Bush for impeachable offenses. We call upon Wisconsin members of
the House of Representatives to introduce Articles of Impeachment, which is that body's
recourse when our President threatens our Constitution and Bill of Rights.
The Green Party of the United States, of which Wisconsin is an affiliated
member, endorsed a resolution at their national convention in July 2003,
calling for impeachment of George W. Bush. The resolution cites President
George W. Bush's and Vice President Dick Cheney's "pattern of making false
statements to Congress, the American people, and the world to win support
for actions by the American government and military forces" in violation of
the U.S. Constitution, Charter of the United Nations, and other international laws; "squandering the resources of the American people to
serve the interests of transnational corporations"; and war crimes, including the use of depleted uranium and cluster bombs in the preemptive
invasion of Iraq. The systematic use of torture by the United States can be
added to the list of war crimes.
The Fourth Amendment to the Constitution says, 'The right of the people to
be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants
shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and
particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things
to be seized.'
The Wisconsin Green Party stands on the four pillars of Social & Economic
Justice, Grassroots Democracy, Nonviolence, and Ecological Wisdom.
