In spite of popular demand for the passage of SB1, Wisconsin Assembly
Speaker John Gard and Majority Leader Huebsch have stated that they do not
intend to schedule it for a vote in the Assembly during the next few weeks.
"Although Wisconsin government has been tainted with the illegal use of
state employees for campaigning as well as with the influence of monied
interests, it is only recently that there have been prosecutions - and only
a few prosecutions at that," said Jessica Thill, a Wisconsin Green from
LaCrosse. "The prosecutions have been by district attorneys, not by either
the Elections or Ethics Boards. Clearly Wisconsin is lacking in checks and
balances. Gard and Huebsch need to be pressured to bring SB1 up for a vote.
"The recent convictions of Wisconsin Legislators are only the tip of the
iceberg," said Ruth Weill, Co-chair of the Wisconsin Green Party. "The
Wisconsin Legislature has been increasingly steeped in corruption for decades. We need some
accountability to the people of Wisconsin, and some reform that will bring clean government back to Wisconsin. SB1,
authored by Mike Ellis, is a very good first step."
SB1 would combine the partisan Elections Board with the current ineffective
Ethics board, creating a nonpartisan body, the Government Accountability
Board, whose purpose would be to insure that Wisconsin's election and campaign laws are
followed.
