OREGON, WI -- Wisconsin U.S. Senate candidate Rae
Vogeler spoke out today against Sen. Herb Kohl, D-WI, who is co-sponsoring a bill to lead us into
a war with Iran. Kohl joined 20 other Democratic Party senators in supporting the Iran
Freedom Support Act. This bill, put forth by Sen. Rick Santorum, R-PA, calls for tougher economic
sanctions against the Iranian people and millions of dollars to support covert 'pro-democracy'
groups working against the Iranian government. Vogeler warned of a repeat of the pattern of
aggressive posturing and Democratic Party capitulation that led to the
curren disaster in Iraq.
With the help of pro-war Democrats like Herb Kohl, the Bush administration is seeking to force
a "regime change" in Iran. Just as during the buildup to Iraq, it now claims that Teheran, by
pursuing a nuclear capability, has become a global and regional threat that must be stopped.
Administration officials are threatening the use of U.S. weapons of mass destruction,
including economic sanctions and possible use of tactical nuclear weapons, if Iran goes ahead.
"If the history of the Iraq conflict tells us
anything, it is that the results of regime change in Iran will be disastrous," Vogeler
said. "The U.S. economy will slide deeper into debt and possibly recession. The Middle East will slide
further into chaos. The U.S. will be further isolated internationally. There will be greater
anger among 1.2 billion Muslims from the Middle East to the South Pacific. Oil prices will
continue to skyrocket. There will be more pointless death and destruction."
"I am very concerned, perhaps more than our current administration and Senator Kohl, about
the dangers of nuclear proliferation," added Vogeler. "The U.S has more nuclear weaponry than
any other nation. We have ten thousand nuclear war heads and Iran has none. Let's stop nuclear
proliferation by beginning to disarm here at home."
"Sanctions on Iraq destroyed millions of Iraqi lives," added Vogeler. "Economic sanctions are
the ultimate weapons of mass destruction and the first strike in almost any war."
Vogeler argues that any policy toward Iran must be part of a greater effort toward global nuclear
disarmament and an end to dependence on fossil and nuclear energy. Efforts to deter Iran, a
signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, from pursuing nuclear power cannot
succeed while the Bush Administration violates the same treaty, turns a blind eye to Israel's
nuclear capabilities, and grants India permission to pursue their nuclear ambitions in violation of
the treaty.
"We cannot allow the Bush administration and its Democratic Party accomplices to lead us into
another irresponsible, unjustified war," concluded Vogeler. "The use of nuclear weapons by
the U.S. to prevent further nuclear proliferation in the region is hypocritical, and will certainly
be catastrophic."
