GPUS 2012 Presidential Process
The Green Party of the United States nominated Jill
Stein as
its 2012 presidential nominees, at its July 14th Presidential
nominating convention in Baltimore.
The Green Party has run presidential
candidates in 1996, 2000, 2004,
2008 and now 2012. Our process for 2012 included:
- A
Presidential Exploratory Outreach Letter and Questionnaire to
individuals recommended by Greens across the US. This process
occured in the first half of 2011 . See responses
to the GPUS Presidential Exploratory Outreach Questionnaire here.
- Official recognition as a candidate seeking
the GPUS Presidential nomination. To become officially recognized
as a candidate seeking the GPUS Presidential nomination for President,
one
must demonstrate a level of
grassroots support within the Green Party
and a level of legal and financial organization as a candidate.
The officially recognized candidates as of the GPUS July 14th Presidential
Nomination were:
- Decision-making by state parties during 2011
and 2012 regarding which presidential candidates' names will go
on their primary election ballot, in those states where there are
Green Party primaries in 2012. This process is detailed on this GPUS
2012 Presidential Calendar; and
- Individual state parties choosing delegates
in 2012 to the 2012 Green Party Presidential Convention via a variety
of processes, including primaries, caucuses and state conventions,
followed by
- The 2012 Green Party Presidential
Nomination Convention
