A Call to Action

TITLE: Platform Amendment – Call to Action Update
SPONSOR: Youth Caucus

Passed in a vote by a majority of the caucus steering committee on our 12/17/17 conference call.

BACKGROUND: This update simply reflects updates from the 2016 platform amendment cycle in specifying that we are an anti-capitalist opposition party.

PROPOSAL:

Section being addressed: Call to Action

Current Language:
The United States is locked in a vicious circle, in which it has become increasingly clear that the ‘bipartisan’ political duopoly will drift further rightward at an increasing pace without a true opposition party as a counterweight, as both corporate parties seek to better serve their 1% masters.

Proposed Language:

The United States is locked in a vicious circle, in which it has become increasingly clear that the ‘bipartisan’ political duopoly will drift further rightward at an increasing pace without a true anti-capitalist, opposition party as a counterweight, as both corporate parties seek to better serve their 1% masters.

  1. Thank you. The addition of the questionable term ‘anti-capitalist’ (Did Sandersistas invent its as a synonym for’socialist?’) adds nothing. How else would an opposition to a duopoly committed to an unregulated market ideology be imagined? But it is also mischievous in degrading the whole Green Party political agenda, an agenda for change that takes into consideration the need to control; reduce the ecological destructiveness of looting the planet and its life-forms for the sake of adding to capital of the oligarchy, using existing resources to restore ecological balance where feasible without further injury to the less affluent and those living in poverty, and an inclusionary decision making to ensure that caring will be distributed effectively. That is what the platform is about. Not flaunting ones rage against economic injustice.

  2. I’m in favor of emphasizing anti-capitalism in this context. That said, the original call to action included what was already a bit of a run-on sentence, and this just makes it go even longer. Perhaps we could consider changing the preamble more entirely?

    Something like:

The United States is locked in a vicious circle, in which the political duopoly only drifts further rightward. Without a true anti-capitalist opposition party as a counterweight, both corporate parties will only seek to better serve their big donors, at the expense of the American people.

  3. People coming together for common cause, pooling resources and labor is a form of capitalism. I have been an entrepreneur and without the capital provided by family and friends I would not have succeeded. Our country is not exclusively socialist and neither is this party. I will vote against this change as currently proposed. I further feel that any ism work at present is premature with thinking that our self governance style needs to have more discussion. Let us start with consideration of ecological politics.

  4. Alex Noyle’s suggestion that the GPUS and its parties exist as a political “counterweight” to the existing political counterweight instead of bringing a new, visionary and practical solution to seemingly intractable social problems; and does so in the face of Catastrophic Climate Change and political lag is a derogation of the party’s work to build alternatives and ecologically sound solutions that have little to do with given system.

  5. Here is a bit of a revamp of the entire second paragraph of the Call To Action for your consideration:

As both major Parties seek to better serve their 1% masters, the US government is proving incapable of governing or working with other nations to address current and long-term problems in a time of multiple global crises . Without a true anti-capitalist opposition Party as counterweight to the existing corporate Duopoly, the United States will continue to slide further into Oligarchy.

  6. “The United States is locked in a vicious circle…”
While true enough today(June 2018) this is not a platform statement; it is a comment on the state of the union. Capitalism and diametrically apposed anti-capitalism are moving targets.

So, please. At least provide a time reference in the proposed wording.

I like to think that our efforts will result in a society where “anti-capitalism” is irrelevant and not considered necessary to claim as an identifying feature of our party.
