Panel Discussion in NYC to Feature Green Presidential Candidate with Elections Experts

Green Party presidential candidate David Cobb will join a panel of elections experts in calling for voting reform and protection of the electoral process on Thursday, July 22, at 7 p.m., at the Washington Square Methodist Church, 135 West 4th Street in New York, New York.  The panel, moderated by WBAI Program Director Bernard White, will also feature Amy Goodman of the radio program "Democracy Now," Greg Palast, internationally acclaimed author of "The Best Democracy Money Can Buy," and New York City Board of Elections Commissioner Douglas A. Kellner, among other speakers.

"In 2000, the Republicans and five of their allies on the Supreme Court stole the presidency from the American people and we have to reform our electoral system to ensure that it never happens again," said Cobb.  "African-American voters were systematically disenfranchised in Florida and elsewhere in the United States millions of people were denied the right to vote by faulty voting machines and incompetent elections officials.  And for the third presidential election in a row, the winning candidate won office with less than a majority of the popular vote."

Cobb called for international monitoring of the presidential election, paper trails for electronic voting machines and Instant Runoff Voting.  "Instant Runoff Voting will ensure that the winning candidate is supported by a majority of voters and it allows citizens to vote their hopes instead of their fears," said Cobb.

Cobb will also join New York Greens at noon on Friday, July 23, outside the Times Square military recruiting station to protest the continued occupation of Iraq and to collect petition signatures to put his campaign on the ballot in New York.  On Saturday, July 24, Cobb will be petitioning in Flushing, Queens, with Evergreen Chou, Green Party candidate for New York Assembly District 22 in the morning and will join Rebecca White, Green Party candidate for New York State Senate District 17, and Mark Borino, Green Party candidate for Assembly District 53 in Brooklyn in the afternoon.
