COBB SUPPORTS SAME SEX MARRIAGE, CONDEMNS CALIFORNIA COURT RULING

SAN FRANCISCO, CA -- Green Presidential Candidate David Cobb joined Greens in San Francisco yesterday in condemning Thursday's California Supreme Court ruling which voided marriage licenses issued to same-sex couples in San Francisco earlier this year.

Appearing at a protest rally of about 2000 people gathered on the steps of City Hall, San Francisco Green Party county council member Dr. Paul Quick read a statement from Cobb on the decision.

"The right to marry is an equal rights issue," said Cobb.  "Courts have historically been wrong and socially behind the times and the California Supreme Court is no exception.  The Dred Scott decision said a black man was property and had no rights that a white man was bound to respect.  In Plessy v. Ferguson, the Court upheld Jim Crow segregation laws.  The Supreme Court also upheld state laws preventing women from voting until the Nineteenth Amendment was passed, superceding all those prohibitive state laws.  Like these earlier decisions, the decision of the California Supreme Court is an affront to human rights and human dignity and will not stand the test of time."

Addressing the crowd, Quick said, "I bring you greetings and solidarity from the only party that fully supports the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex and queer people and the party that fully supports the right to marry. That party is the Green Party."

Quick told the crowd that voting for Cobb was a way to demonstrate support for gay rights and the right to marry.  Because California's Electoral College votes are virtually assured to go to the Democratic Party, Quick said that "if you live in California, there is no chance of helping to elect Bush. You can vote your conscience without reservation. You can vote for the candidate who supports your rights and who will work with you to change politics for the better."

"We have to keep organizing and demanding our civil rights if we're going to create the civil society we want," said Cobb.
