Ballot Status History – Pacific Green Party of Oregon

1996: The Pacific Party of Oregon qualified for statewide ballot status in November 1996

In Oregon since 1993, to qualify for the ballot a political party must receive at least 1% of the vote in a statewide race for a full term of office and have a number of registered voters equal to 1/10 of 1% (0.10%) of registered voters in the state out of the number who voted for a governor in the last race; or  simply have a number of registered voters equal to 0.5% of all registered voters.

In November 1996, Ralph Nader ran for President and received 49,415 votes (3.6%), and Gary Kutcher ran for U.S. Senate and received 14,193 votes (1.04%) . Both the 3.6% and the 1.04% surpassed the 1% required to qualify the Pacific Party of Oregon for the ballot.

The Pacific Party also had 2,025 registered voters as members as of November 30th, 1996 (0.102%). This 0.102% surpassed the 1/10 of 1% of all registered voters (0.10%) needed to qualify the Pacific Party of Oregon for the ballot, when a statewide candidate also receives at least 1% of the vote.


1998: The Pacific Green Party of Oregon retained statewide ballot status in November 2000

In November 1998, Karyn Moskowitz ran for U.S Senate and received 22,024 votes (1.97%) and Blair Bobier ran for Governor and received 15,842 votes (1.4%). Both the1.97% and the 1.4% surpassed the 1% required to qualify the Pacific Party of Oregon for the ballot, when the party also had at least (0.10%) of all registered voters in the state out of the number who voted for a governor in the last race.

The Pacific Green Party also had 3,737 registered voters as members as of November 30th, 1998, surpassing the 0.10% of registered voters needed to qualify the Pacific Party of Oregon for the ballot, when a statewide candidate also receives at least 1% of the vote.


2000: The Pacific Green Party of Oregon retained statewide ballot status in November 2000

In November 2000, Ralph Nader ran for President and received 77,537 votes (5.5%), and Lloyd Marbet ran for Secretary of State and received 64,555 votes (4.4%.) Both the 5.0% and the 4.4% surpassed the 1% required to qualify the Pacific Party of Oregon for the ballot, when the party also had at least (0.10%) of all registered voters in the state out of the number who voted for a governor in the last race.

The Pacific Green Party also had 7,762 registered voters as members as of November 30th, 2000 (0.40%). This 0.40% surpassed the 0.10% of registered voters needed to qualify the Pacific Party of Oregon for the ballot, when a statewide candidate also receives at least 1% of the vote.


2004: The Pacific Green Party of Oregon retained statewide ballot status in November 2004

In November 2004 , the Pacific Green Party of Oregon had 13,628 registered voters (0.65%) as members as of November 30th, 2004. This 0.65% surpassed the 0.5% of registered voters needed to qualify the Pacific Party of Oregon for the ballot, when no statewide candidate also receives at least 1% of the vote.


2006: The Pacific Green Party of Oregon retained statewide ballot status in November 2008

In November 2006, Joe Keating received 20,030 votes (1.5%) for Governor, surpassing the 1% required to qualify the Pacific Party of Oregon for the ballot, when the party also had at least (0.10%) of registered voters in the state out of the number who voted for a governor in the last race.

The Pacific Green Party also had 12,083 registered voters as members as of November 30th, 2006 (0.61%). This 0.61% surpassed the 0.10% of all registered voters needed to qualify the Pacific Party of Oregon for the ballot, when a statewide candidate also receives at least 1% of the vote.


2008: The Pacific Green Party of Oregon retained statewide ballot status in November 2008

In November 2008, Walt Brown received 76,856 votes (5%)  for Attorney General and Seth Woolley received 51,271 votes (3%) votes for Secretary of State. Both the 5% and the 3% surpassed the 1% required to retain ballot status for the Pacific Green Party of Oregon, when the party also had at least (0.10%) of all registered voters in the state out of the number who voted for a governor in the last race.

The Pacific Green Party also had 8,801 registered voters (0.41%) as members as of November 30th, 2008. This 0.41% surpassed the 1/10 of 1% of registered voters needed to qualify the Pacific Party of Oregon for the ballot, when a statewide candidate also receives at least 1% of the vote.


2012: The Pacific Green Party of Oregon sued the state of Oregon in May 2012 regarding statewide ballot status 

In May 2012, Seth Wooley and the Pacific Green Party of Oregon sued the state of Oregon for misinterpreting statue and failing to recognize the 3% of the vote received by Wooley for Secretary of State in 2008 as valid for four years of ongoing ballot status. The suit was later settled when a state law passed in 2013 explicitly made four years the qualification period.

In lieu of this ruling, the Pacific Green Party of Oregon conducted a successful voter registration drive to reach the threshold of 0.5% of the total number of registered voters being registered Green that would qualify the party even without a statewide candidate reaching 1% of the vote, reaching 10,779 registered voters (0.52%) as members as of June 30, 2012.


2012: The Pacific Green Party of Oregon retained statewide ballot status in November 2012

In November 2012, Seth Woolley received 44,235 votes (2.6%) for Secretary of State and Jill Stein received (19,427 votes for 1.1%) for President. Both the 2.6% and the 1.1% surpassed the 1% required to qualify the Pacific Party of Oregon for the ballot, when the party also had at least (0.10%) of registered voters in the state out of the number who voted for a governor in the last race.  This total qualified the party through 2016 – but only once state law was amended in 2013 to explicitly make four years the qualification period.

The Pacific Green Party also had 10,865 registered voters (0.48%) as members as of November 30th, 2012 . This 0.48% surpassed the 1/10 of 1% of all registered voters needed to qualify the Pacific Party of Oregon for the ballot, when a statewide candidate also receives at least 1% of the vote.


2014: The Pacific Green Party of Oregon retained statewide ballot status in November 2014

In November 2014, Christina Lugo ran for US Senate and received and 32,434 votes (2.2%), and Jason Levin ran for Governor and received 29,561 votes (1.5%). Both the 2.2% and the 1.5% surpassed the 1% required to qualify the Pacific Party of Oregon for the ballot, when the party also had at least (0.10%) of registered voters in the state out of the number who voted for a governor in the last race, qualifying the party through 2018.

The Pacific Green Party also had 10,493 registered voters (0.49%) as members as of November 30th, 2012 . This 0.49% surpassed the 1/10 of 1% of all registered voters needed to qualify the Pacific Party of Oregon for the ballot, when a statewide candidate also receives at least 1% of the vote.
